Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold.
King Midas rescued me. Dug me out of the slums and placed me on a pedestal. I'm called his precious. His favored. I'm the woman he Gold-Touched to show everyone that I belong to him. To show how powerful he is. He gave me protection, and I gave him my heart. And even though I don't leave the confines of the palace, I'm safe.
Until war comes to the kingdom and a deal is struck.
Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged. And I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong.
Because these bars I'm kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage. But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I'd never left.
The myth of King Midas reimagined. This compelling adult fantasy series is as addictive as it is unexpected. With romance, intrigue, and danger, the gilded world of Orea will grip you from the very first page.
Please Note: This book contains explicit content and darker elements, including mature language, violence, and non-consensual sex. It is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. This is book one in a series.
“Soon she grew tiny buds,
glinting with gold.
He plucked them by one,
went to town to be sold.”
The myth of King Midas’ retold and not suitable for younger audiences with a faerie twist.
Orea has once had a relationship with Annwynn, a fae realm. They built a link between the realm and Orea and people could go and come as they please. This brought magic to Orea. However, that relationship was broken when the fae began looking down on the humans and no longer wanted cohabitate or interact with humans. When the fae suddenly and aggressively shut down the link, they took magic with them. Those who were left with any magic became the monarchs of the different kingdoms. And that’s how Midas became king.
Auren and Midas had a long history before he became King Midas. He saved her from a hard life of poverty and kept her safe even after gaining the throne. From their history and Midas’ protectiveness of her alludes to him having real feelings for her. BUT he married the powerless princess of Sixth Kingdom to become king.
Ambition will always out.
Midas’ gold-touched everything and anything around him. He went so far as to gold-touch Auren, so that everyone knew she belonged to him, and put her in a cage. A huge beautiful Golden cage. When he tries to use Auren as a distraction against one of the other kings, Auren is shaken and doubts what she knows about him.
Auren is our MC and we get to see how she dealt with being caged to how she reacted once she was able to leave the cage behind. Things always look better in retrospect. This is never more true than with the events Auren goes through. In the end, she would’ve been safer in her cage.
Gild was such an interesting and intriguing story. I started and couldn’t put it down. None of my guesses were correct so now I will just wait and see how the story unfolds.
